GUNIA COLLECTION
GUNIA is a contemporary interpretation of the traditional Carpathian gunia, a handwoven sheep’s wool coat historically worn by Hutsul shepherds as protection against the harsh mountain climate.
Known for its powerful texture and sculptural presence, the original gunia was more than outerwear. It was a garment of protection, resilience, and cultural identity, deeply rooted in the ritual and everyday life of the Ukrainian Carpathians.
For HELENA WAVES, GUNIA is a deeply personal project. Designed and created by Helena Tikunova, the sole designer behind the brand, the collection reflects her Ukrainian heritage and a desire to reinterpret cultural memory through contemporary knitwear. Rather than replicating the traditional garment, GUNIA translates its protective character, tactile richness, and symbolic strength into a modern form.
Each piece is handmade in Estonia using slow fashion principles, with careful attention to texture, softness, wearability, and longevity. The collection explores how heritage can evolve through design, creating knitwear that feels both grounded in history and relevant to contemporary life.
GUNIA brings together craftsmanship, cultural continuity, and quiet strength, transforming an ancient garment archetype into timeless wearable design.
